Beeper Privacy Policy
Last updated July 16, 2025
This Privacy Policy applies to all information Automattic Inc (“we”) collects about you through our beeper.com website, the Beeper desktop and mobile applications, and related Beeper online services (collectively, “Beeper”). Beeper aggregates and displays your messages, including those sent to and from third-party messaging services (each, a “Messaging Service”), in a single inbox. Beeper is part of Automattic Inc., but this Privacy Policy only applies to your use of Beeper and does not apply to the information we collect in connection with any other Automattic Inc. products or services.
Beeper is designed to enable you to send and receive messages directly from the Messaging Services you have connected to Beeper. Your privacy is critically important to us, and we expressly designed Beeper with your privacy in mind. We don’t include ads in Beeper and don’t profit by monetizing your data. Instead, we seek to fulfill our mission by providing you a great product.
This Privacy Policy only governs our use of the information we collect from you via Beeper and not the collection or use of your information by the Messaging Services you activate through Beeper or the payment processors we use to process your subscription payment.
If you have any questions or concerns about how we use your information, please email us at [email protected].
Currently, for most Messaging Services, you can choose to connect to the Messaging Services via an on-device integration or through Beeper Cloud. For some Messaging Services, we may only offer one of the integration options.
On-device integrations When you use on-device integrations, your Messaging Service messages, contacts, and account credentials are never stored on or transit our servers, nor do we have any ability whatsoever to access such information. Beeper is designed to encrypt your messages before sending them and store an encrypted copy on your device, which means that only you (or anyone you let access to your device) should be able to see the message content stored on your device. Beeper also is designed to preserve end-to-end encryption of your messages if supported by your Messaging Service. End-to-end encryption means that your messages are encrypted to prevent us or any third parties from reading them.
Beeper Cloud When you connect to Beeper via our Beeper Cloud integration, your Messaging Service messages, contacts, and credentials will be stored on our servers. The Beeper Cloud integration is designed to encrypt your chat history with zero-access encryption before it is stored on our servers. This means that only you (or anyone you let access your device) should be able to read your chat history - Beeper does not have the decryption keys that can decrypt your chat history.
1. WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?
We collect information from or about you, such as when you create a Beeper account, use Beeper, contact us or from other sources, such as when you log into your account with a third-party social media service. The information we collect includes the following:
- Identifiers. Username, first and last name.
- Profile Information. Social media profile name and profile picture.
- Contact Information. Email address, phone numbers.
- Messaging Service Data: Subject to the limitations mentioned in this policy, we may collect your Messaging Service messages, contacts, and credentials through our Beeper Cloud integration. We receive this information from the Messaging Service.
- Contacts: Separate from the Messaging Service data, you may also grant Beeper permission to access your contacts. This contact information is only stored on-device.
- Location Information. We do not collect precise geolocation information. We do collect IP addresses of our website visitors and users of our mobile applications, and use that to infer the approximate location of our users.
- Internet and mobile network activity information. We automatically collect logs and performance information, including browser type, IP address, unique device identifiers, language preference, referring site, the date and time of access, operating system, and mobile network information, performance metrics, website engagement metrics, and error and crash data.
- Inferences. We make certain inferences about you and your use of Beeper, such as your approximate location from your IP address, and the likelihood of retention or attrition.
2. HOW DO WE USE YOUR INFORMATION?
We use your information for the following business purposes:
- Provide the Beeper service. We use your information to operate Beeper, including connecting to your accounts on Messaging Services; contact you about important product information, such as changes to our Terms of Use (“Terms”) and Privacy Policy and updates to Beeper; provide customer support; troubleshoot bugs or errors; improve Beeper; test new features; detect and protect against malicious, deceptive, fraudulent, or illegal activity; and better understand your online and mobile phone activity while using Beeper.
- Marketing: We may send marketing communications to you using your contact information. You may request that we stop sending you direct marketing communications which you have previously consented to receive. We may continue to send you service-related and other non-marketing communications.
- Legal Reasons. We may use your information to assist with enforcement of our Terms, this Privacy Policy, and other agreements, for legal compliance reasons, and to otherwise protect the rights and property of Automattic and others.
- Determine Pricing. We may use your approximate location to determine subscription costs.
3. WITH WHOM WILL WE SHARE YOUR INFORMATION?
We only share and disclose your information with the following third parties:
-
Service Providers. We may share your information with third parties that perform services for us (“Service Providers”) who perform services for us or on our behalf and require access to such information to do that work. We use Service Providers for payment processing, security, network management, and cloud storage, as well as other Service Providers.
-
Purchasers of Our Business. We may share your information in connection with any merger or acquisition of our business to another company.
-
To Protect Rights, Property, and Others: We may disclose information about you when we believe in good faith that disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the property or rights of us, third parties, or the public at large.
-
Law Enforcement. We may share your information in order to comply, as necessary, with applicable laws and regulatory requirements, or in response to a valid legal request.
-
With your consent: We may share and disclose information with your consent or at your direction. For example, we may share your information with third parties when you authorize us to do so, like when you connect Beeper to a back-up provider, as discussed below.
You may create a backup of your messages directly on Box, Dropbox and any other third-party service we may integrate with Beeper or enable in the future (“Back Up Provider”). The collection, sharing and use of information by Back Up Providers is governed by their respective privacy policies.
4. HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?
Unless we need to retain information for legal reasons (as described above), we keep your information until you ask us to delete it or until you delete your Beeper account. If you ever decide to stop using Beeper, you can ask us to delete your account by emailing us at [email protected] or logging into your account and clicking on settings.
5. HOW DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SAFE?
We work hard to protect your information against unauthorized access or use. We seek to protect your information by implementing physical and electronic safeguards though no security system is completely secure.
6. DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS?
You must be at least 13 years old or the minimum legal age in your country/state to use Beeper. If you live in a country in the European Economic Area, you must be at least 16 years old to use Beeper.
7. USE OF COOKIES
We use cookies in order to provide better service, to track usage of Beeper, and to address certain security issues. We do not use cookies for profiling or advertising. When you access Beeper, we send the cookies to your computer or phone. The cookies help us keep track of your visits and your activity on Beeper and to understand how you interact with us.
8. CONTROLS FOR DO-NOT-TRACK FEATURES
We do not currently respond to “Do Not Track” or DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online.
9. PRIVACY RIGHTS UNDER THE GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION (“GDPR”)
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (“EEA”), United Kingdom or Switzerland (collectively, “Europe”), data protection laws give you certain rights with respect to your personal data, subject to any exemptions provided by the law, including the rights to:
